Appeal Process for Entrance to First Grade without Completing Kindergarten
Appeal Process for Entrance to First Grade without Completing Kindergarten
While completion of kindergarten is generally recommended, South Madison recognizes that some children may be socially, emotionally, and academically prepared for first grade without attending kindergarten. Appeals for entrance to first grade will be considered based on the following criteria:
- The child must be of legal settlement within the South Madison Community School Corporation or a sibling living in the same household as a current non-resident student
- The child’s birthdate must fall after August 1 but no later than September 30.
- The child must meet minimum expectations on a screening assessment.
- Space must be available in the requested school’s first-grade classes.
Based on the screening outcome, the Assistant Superintendent shall make a determination as to whether the student will enroll in kindergarten or first grade.
How to Appeal
Parents/guardians must submit an appeal request no later than two (2) weeks before the start of the school year. Appeals will only be considered for children with August or September birthdays.
Screening Process
Once an appeal request is submitted:
- Parents will be contacted to schedule an appointment for screening.
- The child will participate in a screening assessment. While the child is completing the screening, parents will complete information forms about their child. The child will need to go with the screener during this time.
- The screening process will take approximately one hour.
- If a translator is necessary during the screening process to ensure clear communication and understanding for parents and/or children who are non-English speakers, please inform us when you schedule the screening appointment.
- Following the assessment, parents will receive a decision by mail within two weeks.
